Sparta w/ Straylight Run and Lovedrug @ Slim’s 6/2/07
•June 4, 2007 • Leave a CommentFucking amazing show Saturday night. Lovedrug opened and played their set. I thought they were pretty good even though the songs sounded the same except for “Blackout” and some other song.
Then Straylight Run (zomg, der r MILF, Dr. Gregory House, and my U.S. History teacher in Straylight) came and played their set. They were awesome. Everyone in this band is really talented. Some people in the audience were dancing while they played their set. After they played a song some guy shouted, “YEAH, MICHELLE!!!” This guy was like half drunk. And at one point after he was done shouting he was like, “Sorry, she’s hot y’ know?” Anyways, Straylight’s finale was intense. Like the ‘throw your fist into the air’ intense. John’s screams even added more intensity.
Then, the band that everyone was anxiously waiting for came onto the stage. Sparta was amazing. The middle-front of the audience was trying to mosh when Sparta played “Untreatable Disease” and the Slim’s staff was there watching them. Keeley’s spinal spasms during the “Taking Back Control” chorus was a sight to see. He bent his back like 90° after he would sing “TAKING BACK CONTROL!!!” It seemed that he would snap in half or something. After they ended their set with “While Oceana Sleeps” they left the stage and then came back to do one more song, “Atlas”, which Jim dedicated to some guy that died in his mid-20s. Before they played “Atlas” some guy in the front was on his cellphone and Jim was like, “Everyone be quiet. This guy is on his cellphone.” Then the cellphone guy stopped talking and then Jim said, “Oh no… it’s okay man. You can talk. Oh no man, it’s cool… keep talking. I was on the phone while I was downstairs. So…” Those weren’t exactly his words but they’re close to it. The way they ended “Atlas” was emotional. The entire band left the stage except Jim. He was alone on the stage playing his guitar and singing, “More than lights expose who you are.” The audience was singing in unison with him too. To me it felt like I was in a church’s worship service. I got that heightened spiritual feeling. It felt as though some warm, ethereal feeling was moving throughout my body.
All in all, this show was pretty amazing. Lovedrug, Straylight Run, and Sparta put on a superb show. I’d like to see these bands play together again someday.
